Baroda is becoming increasingly synonymous with education and towering benevolently of all is the The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Originally founded in 1881, as “Baroda College”, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is a premier unitary residential University established in 1949 by Shrimant Maharaja Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad as a tribute to his Highness Shrimant Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.
It is a State University and the only University in Gujarat with English as a medium of instruction. It has 13 Faculties, 03 Constituent Colleges, 02 Institutions & 08 Centres of specialized studies wherein more than 38,000 students pursue higher studies under the care and supervision of more than 1100 teaching and 1190 supporting staff members.
The University offers wide range of courses, giving an opportunity for education from early childhood upto Ph.D. Some of the internationally renowned Faculties of the University are Faculty of Social Work, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Family & Community Sciences and the Faculty of Performing Arts.
Some of the most esteemed Alumni of the University include Sri Aurobindo, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Mr. K.M. Munshi, Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan, Mr. Vishal Sikka, Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Prof. I.G. Patel, Mr. Ajay Bhatt, Mr. Sam Pitroda to name a few.

Faculty of Social Work, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda owes its origin to the progressive outlook and vision of the first Vice-Chancellor of the University, Smt. Hansa Mehta. Though chronologically, it was the third institution imparting professional social work education in India, it happens to be the very first to have the status of a full-fledged Faculty. Established on March 15, 1950, the Faculty made a modest beginning as the Baroda School of Social Work (In 1951, elevated to the Faculty status) in the white pavilion building Sayaji Baug, shortly moved to the seminar building of Baroda College and later came to occupy its present premises in 1960. It has followed a generic approach to Social Work Education, since its inception.
The Faculty addresses the new challenges and work demands of the changing scenario with unique diagnostic, intervention and managerial skills to reach the vulnerable groups. The Faculty endorses its sustainable initiatives with thrust areas of human resource management, poverty alleviation and social development with emphasis on specific target groups.
The Faculty commits itself towards establishing strategic networks for University-Industry-Community Interface for better exposure and meaningful education. The Faculty with its generic base offers a unique model of Social Work & HRM. The Faculty provides leadership and guidance in Social Work and Human Resource Management through its extensive Research, Consultancy, Field Work and Extension Work and join hands wherever necessary with Campus Agencies.
